Who to Manage In... The FL Championship

After last nights success with the Who to Manage In... The Premier League, I've decided that it will absolutely worthwhile continuing this series for the rest of England for now.
I've also spoken to mod joelv93, and we've decided that making this a weekly post series with each new post coming up on Saturday - quite what those posts will look like I haven't decided yet, to keep the character count for the post though please check my comment on this post for more details.
This is the Championship, arguably England's most exciting league, and they have plenty of teams to choose from with great stories and histories - I will take you through my top 3 choices for the division.
There were a lot of big teams with big histories to consider, so whittling it down to my favourite 3 was so hard, I hope you like my choices and aren't disappointed by who misses the cut.
Leeds United:
Budget: £7,500,000 Stadium: Elland Road Rivals: Galatasary, Manchester United and Huddersfield
Tumultuous beginnings, the club of Leeds United is one that has always flirted with success and demise throughout it's history, making them quite possibly the most infuriating and exciting teams to follow for English football fans - with the club bouncing around the first and second tiers in its formative years, they would have to wait for the 60's and Don Revie for their first taste of success - sit back, this is a long History.
And Don Revie would bring success to the Yorkshire club, in 13 years in charge he changed the club in unprecedented ways - right down to changing their kit to all an all white strip - Rev would win two Division 1 titles, one FA Cup and one League Cup, alongside a 2nd Division Title and a Charity Shield success.
It was nothing short of a golden era for the club, and after Revie left for the England job, it looked set to continue with the appointment of the then growing Legacy that was Brian Clough. But the man who had brought Derby close to a European Cup win would last just 44 days in the job that would later become the basis of the Novel and Film The Damned United. What followed was 14 more years of mediocrity for Leeds, despite losing a European Cup final, with 7 managers coming and going as the drug called success became a high chased by the board.
However, Leeds would come out at the end of the 80's and start of the 90's, with the appointment of Wilkinson and signing of Strachan, they would return to the first division of English football in 89/90, finish 4th the following season, and then in 1991/92 - the final season before the First Division became The Premier League - Leeds United would win the title again for the first time in 18 years.
But 92/93 saw the club narrowly avoid relegation, 1996 saw them lose a cup final in a poor display and 95/96 once again left them with a midtable mediocrity, the 90's left them with a bitter taste but a very successful youth academy.
The 2000's started well, with O'Leary managing to take the club to successive top 5 finishes and European Football once again returned to Elland Road, but a game at Galatasary would mark this era for the club for all the wrong reasons - as two fans were stabbed to death before a match, and the clubs struck up one of the most hateful rivalry's in world football.
The chase of success once again got too much for the board, and they would take out large loans against the prospect of success in order to fund a large push, but with two successive finishes outside of European Football the club went into meltdown and by the end of 2003/04 season all their players and assets of value to them were sold off, the club relegated and by the end of 2006/07 the club would be in League One and stuck in this way for the next three seasons - due largely to the constant points deductions brought on by administrators.
More mediocre, second division football followed, before the Cellino era began. A man convicted in Italy, tax evasion and quite literally more erratic than eccentric, he retired the number 17 shirt due to superstitious reasons - the only way was down for many Leeds fans, who felt that this man was not suitable for the club - so this is where we are, and where you step in at Leeds.
  • The Aims
Return Leeds to the first division, return them to Europe and return them to success and give Yorkshire the kind of club that they deserve from Leeds. They are not bad people, and they are not a bad club, the boards they've had to endure are just not easy to work with.
  • The Squad
When you start your career Leeds United look like This, a side loaded with young talented but being wasted with older nobodies filling in the side.
  • Transfer Targets
You might only have £7.5m to spend, but in the Championship I am certain you'll be able to compete, I would personally drop Byram into RB and make your first signing a new RM.
In CM you're stacked for the future with Cook, Mowatt and Phillips likely to become good enough to start for you. A new signing for the here and now could be just the thing you need.
Finally, Antenucci is good but old, I would advise looking to trade him for someone younger and more likely to lead you for years to come.
Leeds are also famous for a youth academy, so I would absolutely say signing one up ASAP will be crucial.
Right Midfielder
  • Bailey
Leon is Jamaican, a country heavily related to England, and plays for Genk. The pacey winger would be the perfect addition to your side, adding a quick attacking side to you, a bit of training and within the first season you'll sign up the star for years to come.
  • Lazaro
Of Salzburg, the Austrian midfielder will probably become the best all-rounder that you will see in the game. I would say signing him is one of the best investments you can make in the game.
  • March
Solly plays for Brighton and looks to have a decent potential, and one that could be a brilliant "hidden gem" signing for you. I've not used him personally, so can't comment but he looks like the perfect RM.
  • Green
United States kid could yet be one of the starter, not cutting it at Bayern a new challenge would suit him and it would suit Leeds to give it to him - especially as he could cost less than a million pounds.
Centre Midfielders
  • Kace
Albanian plays for PAOK, so you will need to GTN scout him with a free scout if you want a full report on him. But I will tell you that he's one of the best midfielders that I have used in the second division, he's box to box and really good at everything.
  • Pritchard
Spurs' 22 year old attacking midfielder will probably be wanting a new challenge and shouldn't cost too much, he's a really good playmaker and will add a lot to the side if you pick him up.
  • Hughes
Will had a lot of hype around him, and it has kind of fell off lately, signing him will give you a starter with a long term future, and he's also a pretty convincing all-rounder in the middle as well.
  • Solanke
Technically on loan at Vitesse from Chelsea, the England forward can be signed permanently from the Dutch side and is actually a really good finisher. I don't think he'd be happy being abandoned in Holland, so bring him back to England early.
  • Caballero
Another youngster, the Paraguayan plays for Vaduz and is one of the best "obscure" kids I've used, he shouldn't cost too much, and as a Championship striker should hit solid heights.
  • Traore and Austin
Bertrand of Chelsea looks like a loan prospect worth signing for two years and then waiting to bring in some one more permanent signing in the future.
You can then add Austin as a pre-contract option in January to bring in a Premier League quality forward if you think you will be promoted.
Derby County:
Budget: £10,000,000 Stadium: Pride Park Rivals: Nottingham Forest
Originally nothing more than a Winter Interest for Cricket fans in Derbyshire, the club has become something special - despite losing their first competitive game 7-0 to Walsall Town in the FA Cup.
The clubs early years were okay, to say the least, as a minor force in England slowly getting stronger, it wouldn't be until 1967 and the beginning of the Clough Era that they would step out onto the big stage of England. Clinching promotion in 1969, they would finish 4th in the top flight in their first season - though they would then not be allowed to compete in Europe due to financial problems, though in that 1971/72 season they would win the First Division title. In 1972/73, they would not manage to retain their title, but would reach the semi-finals before losing to Juventus in a controversial game, one that lead to Clough calling them "Cheating Italian Bastards", the kind of heated outspoken comment that would eventually lead to his departure from the club in October of '73.
1974/75 saw Mackay win the title for Derby again, as they would have success after Clough - but thereafter it was decline, as the club cycled through manager after manager, they would get relegated twice in this this span and narrowly avoided going out of business.
The late 80's saw back-to-back promotions, and a 5th place finish for the Rams, but due to the Heysel Stadium Disaster they would once again be unable to compete in Europe, as once again they were robbed - Maxwell, their owner, would not put up anymore investment and the club declined again, being relegated to the second division once again.
The 90's saw a heavy period of investment, and the club coming close time and time again to making that step back up, before the 1995/96 finally made the breakthrough - a second placed finish enough to get back to the Premier League - and 1999 saw the move to Pride Park.
The 2000's have been nothing but disappointing by comparison, setting a record points tally at the wrong end of the Premier League and now struggling to find a way back into the top flight, this is where you come in.
  • The Aims
First and foremost, return to the Premier League, Derby are a club deserving of top flight football.
Then, erase that recent memory of the points record they don't want and win the title.
And then, round it out with the European Title that they've chased for so long - and to sweeten the deal, do it by beating those "Cheating Italian Bastards".
  • The Squad
Derby line up like This in career mode, and this is the reason I choose them ahead of Nottingham Forest here. They line up with a fully British first XI, and only one foreign player in the whole match day squad, it's just a really nice way to build the team going forward.
  • Transfer Targets
A goalkeeper would be my first signing, you do have a 32 year old Carson who will help you out but someone to anchor the position for years to come is a must in my opinion.
Then I would ask a CDM be signed, as Thorne is okay but far from the best, followed by a CB and LB.
A striker could be important, but I think in term of attack you have enough to get through the first season.
Goal Keepers
  • Walton
Brighton's young keeper could be your future starter, and I wouldn't tell you turn your nose up at him. I would sign him, and sign him quick.
  • Bentley
Daniel of Southend is in the same boat as Walton, and if you find Christian to be too expensive this would be the next best thing.
Central defensive mids
  • Cook
Lewis has all it takes to become one hell of a player, and signing him from Leeds isn't too unrealistic. His defensive stats need some work, but I'd take him over Thorne.
  • Oxford
Reece is West Ham's newest product, so you may be fighting with a lot of big clubs to bring him in - a loan deal may work best here - but if you feel like trying to bring him in permanently, no one will blame you, he's got a hell of a future.
  • Reed
Harrison is a Southampton product that hasn't quite cut the first team yet, and his tenacity and work rate alone make him worth the fee. I would sign him up.
Centre Back
  • Souttar's
Both Souttar's can play at CB and both will make it for you in a few seasons, 6ft 1 John will be the most likely to make the first team within the first year and can play both CDM and CB in rotation for you. While his 6ft 6 brother won't be far behind and will probably dominate the league, I mean he's a giant.
left backs
  • Obita
Reading full back once again gets a mention, I absolutely rate him for this team, and would sign him up in England right now. He's the perfect flair defender to lead the line.
  • Henry
Walsall's Rico is a physical monster, and so if you can trust Warnock for the first season or half season while you get him up to stratch, you're looking at one of England's finest young products.
Blackburn Rovers:
Budget: £6,250,000 Stadium: Ewood Park Rivals: Burnley
A founding member of the Premier League and original Football League in England, they're one of only three teams to hold that honour - I will be focusing on their 90's and early 2000's history here, though their history is grand so you should give it a read if you want.
The introduction of the Walker ownership and the signing of Dalglish as manager of the club at the start of the 1990's was exciting for fans of Rovers, as the new owner made millions of pounds available for transfers, and in 1991/92 season ended 26 years out of the top flight by winning the play-off final, earning the right to play in the inaugural Premier League season.
The summer of '92 continued the excitement for Blackburn, as they hit headlines with the signing of Alan Shearer - the 22 year old costing a then British record £3.5m, a pittance compared to today's fees - as they continued to fund the rise of the club.
Their first season in the first division ended well for the club, with a 4th place finish for a newly promoted side a huge achievement, they would then finish second in 1993/94 as they continued to improve - and then in the 1994/95 season they stunned English football, as title race with a Manchester United side beginning to dominate the league went down to the final day of the season, Blackburn would win the title by a single point and I am linking you a diary of that season which I would absolutely recommend giving a read - and Blackburn would become the only side not considered a super power of today to win the Premier League.
But things were not the stuff of dreams here after, as a poor start to the 1995/96 season after Dalglish left his managerial duties, and the side struggled in the bottom half for much of the year. The 1996/97 season was much the same story, as the club didn't look like repeating the success, and narrowly avoided relegation just two years after winning the title.
1997/98 offered respite however, as Hodgson led a rejuvenated Blackburn side to a 6th place finish and subsequent European football. But it turned out to be the death rattle of a dream, as the following season saw Blackburn make yet another poor start, and just 4 seasons after winning the league title over Manchester United, a goalless draw with the Red Devils would confirm their relegation.
1999/2000 looked like continuing their down turn, as they would spend much of the year hovering around the relegation zone, and were hit hard by the death of owner Jack Walker at the start of the 2000/2001 season - but they would use it as a catalyst, dedicating their promotion charge that year to the benefactor of their early 90's success, and after a much better run would finish 2nd to get up to the Premier League once again.
The 2001/02 season continued to bring successes anew, and they would win the League Cup, before 2002/03 saw them finish 6th and secure European Football for two years in a row. 2004/05 left them in a difficult position, as Souness left the club for Newcastle, and they struggled around 15th - eventually finishing there too - and with Mark Hughes taking charge, 2005/06 saw them once again finishing 6th for a third Euro qualification in 5 years.
But things once again took a mediocre turn, as Hughes left for Manchester City and the club only managed European Qualification by virtue of a good run in the Intertoto Cup, but for the most part things were stable at Rovers in a time when "the big 4" were running rampant at the top of the league.
But things were thrown into instability, as Venky's bought the club and sacked Allardyce replacing him with the inexperienced Kean. The club would post huge losses, the owners became cryptic with their promises of funding and amid a storm of poor results both on and off the field the club would finally be relegated out of the Premier League in 2011/12.
Since they've struggled with the board not understanding football, and poor management, and have not yet looked like making a return to the top flight - this is where you come in.
  • The Aims
Return Blackburn to a side that Jack Walker would be proud of, and win the Premier League title in his memory - bonus points if you can make a 2020/21 title and win the title twenty years after he died.
Then, give them a run in Europe that they are missing out on, they've made it consistently but never really gave it a good go - I think they deserve it.
  • The Squad
And Blackburn line up like This when they start the career mode. Their team quite average as it goes, though the star of the show is evidentially Rhodes up top.
  • Transfer Targets
Given that the most logical move will be to push Marshall back to RM, you'll need yourself a RB worth mentioning in this team, as well a new keeper and attacking midfielders. A lot of work needs to be done.
  • Goalkeepers
Now I will just tell you, this is just a copy and paste of the above, except that one of those two should start for you straight away.
  • Walton
Brighton's young keeper could be your future starter, and I wouldn't tell you turn your nose up at him. I would sign him, and sign him quick.
  • Bentley
Daniel of Southend is in the same boat as Walton, and if you find Christian to be too expensive this would be the next best thing.
Right backs
  • Paterson
The Scotsman from Hearts will have to learn fast, but he's still a damn sight better than what Blackburn have to offer already. Physically, he's on point so I wouldn't mind having him - training his defensive stats to a good point.
  • Kane
Todd has already spent some time on loan with Rovers, and would walk into the team again now that he's been "let go" to N.E.C due to the squad size issues with Chelsea. He's a very good right back, but much like Paterson, will need to grow fast to keep up.
  • Odubajo
Another physically impressive right back, the Hull man might be a bit expensive for you at first but he'll still walk straight into the team, and is another England prospect.
Attacking Midfielders
  • Pritchard
Spurs man will once again walk straight into this side, an improve your creative options drastically. He's also got a decent free kick on him, that I forgot to mention last time, so yes I would go for him.
  • Maddison
Coventry forward is well worth bringing up a step from League 1 to the Championship, he'll come on strong and fast for you - which is great, because his playstyle is also fast, especially for a 10, he's the classic English playmaker.
  • Onomah
Another prospect of Spurs, whether his signing for a lower league club is believable or not is your discretion. I personally would love to sign him, a seriously good mix of pace and dribbling there's nothing holding the 18 year old from being a top, top player.
Career Mode Ideas
Return to Glory is essentially the best way to do these, as you'll be spending a good four years building for domination.
And that concludes the Championship part of this series, I apologise for the teams that missed the cut - some where close, particularly Burnley and Nottingham Forest - but I went with my own opinions.

"...It was the Queen who I was most impressed with"—Trump, taking the revelation that the U.K.’s ambassador thinks he’s stupid as well as expected.

Making No Census

President Trump announced over the holiday that he wants to circumvent a Supreme Court decision that would prevent him from rigging the 2020 Census for Republicans by adding a citizenship question to it.
Here’s where things stand on the Census scandal as of Monday night:
Late last month, the Supreme Court decided that the Trump administration could not include a citizenship question in the census unless they provided a better justification for doing so. But while you were grilling on the Fourth, President Trump threw his Justice and Commerce Departments into disarray by ordering them to proceed with efforts to include the citizenship question in the Census. The Commerce Department had already begun printing the Census itself, and DOJ had insisted that the 2020 Census would proceed without a citizenship question.
Then, late on Sunday, DOJ announced that a completely new team of lawyers would be assigned to the Census case.
What’s the problem with the original team of lawyers? Two possibilities:
  1. They want no part in defending Trump’s new rationale for needing a citizenship question in court, and believe that it’s a lie, immoral, or downright illegal.
  2. They’ve already a) defended Trump’s original rationale, which the Supreme Court ruled was a lie, and b) argued that the case needed to be resolved by the end of June or it would jeopardize the Census itself, which under the Constitution must begin next year. They’d completely torch their credibility if they went back to the courts and admitted that was all bullshit. But also c) maybe they all needed a little break! Lawyering is hard!
Why does the administration want to include a citizenship question? A citizenship question would intimidate respondents in households with undocumented immigrants in them, leading to an undercount in their communities. This undercount would give white, Republican communities more representation in Congress and more government funding.
The good news? For now, the citizenship question can’t legally be included in the Census, and it faces multiple hurdles. One of them is a new legal challenge arguing that the citizenship question is unconstitutionally discriminatory. But Trump is lawless, and Attorney General William Barr claims he’s found a “pathway” to get the question on the Census survey. The threat that the question will end up in the Census is still live, and a very big test for Congress and the courts is upon us.

You've Gotta Be Fucking Kidding Me

Federal prosecutors have charged financier Jeffrey Epstein with operating a sex trafficking ring and sexually abusing dozens of underage girls. When federal agents arrested him this weekend, they also raided his New York City mansion and discovered child pornography. Prosecutors argue Epstein, who owns airplanes and a private island, is a flight risk, and should be detained while he awaits trial. Epstein has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The case has been assigned to the public corruption prosecutors in Manhattan, which has raised eyebrows: Epstein has made many powerful friends over the years, including President Trump and former President Clinton, and public corruption prosecutors handle cases involving public servants.
Eleven years ago, different federal prosecutors in Florida struck an unlawful deal with Epstein that allowed him to avoid similar charges. The official in charge of that deal was Alex Acosta, who now serves as Trump’s Labor Secretary.
A lot of shoes are likely to drop.

Under The Radar

Sudan's military reached a power-sharing agreement with the country’s civilian opposition leaders on Friday, in the hope of calming the unrest that has gripped the country since the military deposed the country’s dictator, Omar al-Bashir, in April. The preliminary deal would create a joint sovereign council to run the country as the military transfers power to civilian rule over three years. It also includes an independent investigation into the June 3 massacre of over 100 pro-democracy protesters, along with violence, rapes, and robberies by Sudan’s security forces.

What Else

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has faced backlash for speaking dismissively about the four freshmen House Democratic women who voted against the emergency House border bill—Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), and Ayanna Pressley (D-MA): “All these people have their public whatever and their Twitter world. But they didn’t have any following. They’re four people and that’s how many votes they got.” AOC’s response: “That public ‘whatever’ is called public sentiment. And wielding the power to shift it is how we actually achieve meaningful change in this country.” That’s why in 2020 we need to Rock The Public Whatever!
Joe Biden has apologized for his June remarks fondly recalling his work with segregationists in the Senate. “Was I wrong a few weeks ago to somehow give the impression to people that I was praising those men who I successfully opposed time and again?” Biden said at an event in South Carolina on Saturday. “Yes, I was. I regret it. I’m sorry for any of the pain and misconception I may have caused anybody.”
The United Nations has confirmed that Iran has enriched uranium at levels above limits imposed by the 2015 nuclear agreement the country struck with the U.S. and other global powers. This is the second time Iran has violated the agreement since President Trump unilaterally withdrew the U.S. from it last year, and began trying to sabotage it.
Eric Swalwell has dropped out of the 2020 presidential race, and plans to seek re-election to his House seat. There are a few other candidates we’re hoping he passes the “drop out” torch to.
Former Kansas Secretary of State/guy who was too white supremacist to work in the Trump administration Kris Kobach launched a Senate candidacy today, but misspelled his own name on a Federal Election Committee form. (Note: Kobach’s whole thing is kicking as many Democrats as he can off of voter rolls for things like typos.) In 2018, Kobach lost his bid to become the state’s governor to Democrat Laura Kelly. Let’s make him lose again!
Several Democratic presidential candidates have released their Q2 fundraising totals. Pete Buttigieg raised the most with $24.8M, followed by Joe Biden ($21.5M), Elizabeth Warren ($19.1M), Bernie Sanders ($18M), and Kamala Harris ($12M). Warren and Sanders both amassed their totals without holding any high-dollar fundraisers. This is a lot of money in total, but, per candidate, it’s chump change compared with the war chest Donald Trump has amassed. Fortunately, that’s why we created the Unify or Die fund →
Rep. Justin Amash (I-MI) left the GOP on July 4 and will soon lose his committee assignments and be ousted from the GOP conference later this week. Amash was the only Republican who had called on Congress to begin impeachment proceedings against Trump.
Black singer and actress Halle Bailey will play Ariel in the live action remake of The Little Mermaid, so naturally racists around the world lost their shit. No word yet on if these people know mermaids are fictional creatures.
That Independence Day fiasco Trump threw last week was all so he could get taxpayers to foot the bill for a re-election campaign ad. Hope everyone had a great holiday!!
