50/40/90 club? How about 48/38/88 instead?

The 50/40/90 club is an impressive accomplishment but every year we see someone barely miss the cut off. Obviously you have to draw the line somewhere, but I was curious who else would show up on the list if we lowered the bar 2% all around (far from scientific, I know).
A few thoughts: honestly, there aren't many surprises here- guys like Dirk, Nash, and Bird appear a whole lot, and there are few surprise nostalgia hits from guys like Mario Elie, BJ Armstrong, Jon Barry, Dana Barros, as well as Horny and Price (and more recently, Jose Calderon). Kiki Vandeweghe, Wally Sczerbiak (he was always damn efficient though), and Darren Collison make surprise appearances. From the modern era, Chris Paul and Kyrie are notable members of the 48-38-88 club.
Without further ado, the 50-40-90 club for reference:

What if Barry Bonds got traded to Atlanta in 1992?

In 1992 during Spring Training the Braves almost made a trade for the all-time great/cheater Barry Bonds for Alejandro Pena, Keith Mitchell, and a PTBNL. And no that isn’t made up. Had this trade of happened, the MLB in the 90s could’ve been severely altered. Could the Braves of won more than just the 1995 World Series? Would the Yankees late 90s dynasty been as great? There are many questions that could be asked, and using OOTP 20 we’ll find out the answers to the many possible questions.
1992
The trade has been done, Alejandro Pena, Keith Mitchell, and as the PTBNL I added Ryan Klesko. This will be the first of 5 seasons I sim.
The Braves went 85-77, missing the playoffs being 7 games back of the division winning Padres who went on to win the World Series 4-3 against the Blue Jays. Quite odd the Braves would do worse than real life in the simulation being they got the best hitter of a generation. Also Chipper Jones made his debut and made the All Star Game but no other awards.
At least for Bonds he won the NL MVP getting 16 1st place votes. He got a 8.9 WAR with a .942 OPS, 162 OPS+, .281 AVG, 38 HRs, and 126 RBIs. Along with his MVP award he made the All Star Game and won the Silver Slugger Award for LF. He also led the league in runs, HRs, RBIs, BBs, OBP, and OPS.
1992 as you can tell didn’t exactly go right at all. But Bonds did sign an 8 year extension to stay with Atlanta. Let’s see how year 2/5 goes.
1993
On opening day, the roster for the Braves is C Jerry Willard, 1B Eddie Williams, 2B Jeff Blauser, 3B Gary Cooper, SS Chipper Jones, LF Barry Bonds, CF Deion Sanders, RF David Justice, ace John Smoltz, and closer Rick Aguilera. The biggest difference between this team and the real world team is Greg Maddux staying with the Cubs. Although I don’t think that was as bad as in the sim their worst starter in 1993 would have a 3.70 ERA (David Neid).
The Braves would go 98-64, dominating their division as the second place Dodgers would finish 9 games behind. Everything went well for them. David Justice was their best hitter as he had a whole point WAR better than Bonds. Justice would end up 5th in NL MVP voting.
Bonds would end up finishing 3rd in NL MVP voting with Cardinals’ Ray Lankford and the winner Expos’ Larry Walker. Bonds would have a 7.4 WAR, .286 AVG, .991 OPS, 161 OPS+, and a league leading 49 HRs. Even though he didn’t win MVP he also won LF Silver Slugger and made the All Star Team.
In the playoffs in the NLCS the Braves would beat Bonds’ former team of Pittsburgh in 7 to beat the Mariners in the World Series 4-2. The Braves would win their 3rd World Series ever, 2 years sooner than real life with the addition of star OF Barry Bonds.
Also about Greg Maddux. Maddux won the 1992 Cy Young and in what would’ve been his first season with Atlanta in real life, got a 10.7 WAR.
1994
The Braves didn’t change too much besides the infield going into year 3 out of 5. Same catcher and 1st base but Chipper moved to 3B and Blauser moved to SS with Mark McLemore taking the 2B spot. Gary Cooper is still with the team but on the bench.
The 101-61 Expos made the Wild Card. The Braves went 118-44. They won the most games in a single season ever and with their .728 WP they were only behind the 1902 Pirates and 1906 Cubs. Their worst starter was Todd Stottlemyre. They got him from the Marlins (Marlins got him in 1993 expansion draft) for Terrell Wade, Juan Williams, and Tony Graffanino. He’d have a 3.42 ERA on the season but with Atlanta was 2.23 ERA. Bonds, Chipper, and Justice led their insane offense all getting 6+ WARs (Bonds and Chipper 8+). Also if you’re still wondering about Maddux he won his 2nd Cy Young.
Bonds in 1994 would win his 2nd MVP with Atlanta and his 3rd of his career. He’d lead the league in runs (138), HRs (48), walks (125), OBP (.445), SLG (.641), OPS (1.086), and WAR (8.5). He’d as you assume also win a Silver Slugger at LF and make the All Star team again. He’d get a .324 AVG but not win the Triple Crown with 5 people including his teammate Chipper Jones and batting title winner Craig Biggio of the Rockies ahead of him.
In the playoffs the Braves would beat Montreal 3-1 but would lose to the Dodgers 4-1. The Dodgers would go to the World Series and beat Kansas City 4-2.
1995
Going into year 4 the team looks very different. C Javy Lopez, 1B Rafael Palmeiro, 2B Jeff Blauser, 3B Chipper Jones, SS Ed Giovanola, LF Barry Bonds, CF Deion Sanders, RF Orlando Merced, ace John Smoltz, and stud relievers Tom Hemke and Mark Wohlers. David Justice would sign a 7 year deal with Toronto, leaving Atlanta. But 1995 was the year the real life Braves won the World Series so let’s see how it goes in the simulation.
The Braves, winning 21 less games then 1994 would still win the NL East. Their pitching was fine but their offense wasn’t. Their top 4 in WAR had 4+ WARs with Bonds (9.8), Lopez (5.5), Palmeiro (5), and Chipper (4.4) but after that their 5th highest is Blauser’s 1.9.
Bonds this time around also didn’t win the NL MVP. He led the league in walks (139), OBP (.480), OPS (1.144), and WAR (9.8). But he’d end up in 3rd place behind the Expos’ Albert Belle and the winner Dodgers’ Mike Piazza. He did make the All Star Game but no Silver Slugger this time.
In the playoffs Atlanta would beat Houston in the NLDS but once again lose to the eventual champion Dodgers in the NLCS, getting swept this time. And in baseball’s nightmare scenario the Yankees and Dodgers faced off but the Dodgers won in 5.
1996
In the final year of this sim, the Braves didn’t seem to change much. The only difference was Brian McRae is in CF as Deion Sanders signed a minor league contract with the Twins. But their bullpen is insane with Mark Wholers, Dan Plesac, John Wetteland, Paul Assenmacher, Dennis Cook, and 2 others.
If you’re wondering about Alejandro Pena, Keith Mitchell, and Ryan Klesko here it is. Pena has been an average reliever with ERA going up and down from 3.50 to 4.50 and is with Boston in 1996. Keith Mitchell hasn’t made an appearance in the MLB since his initial debut with Atlanta in 1991 but got selected in the 1995-96 offseason Rule 5 draft by Colorado. Ryan Klesko on the other hand had been very good and is the only one Pittsburgh. He has an 11.6 WAR in 1563 PAs and made the 1994 All Star Game with his 6 WAR in the 94 season.
Braves in 1996 would go 106-56 and once again win the NL East. Looking at just player stats the only way you could think they’re really that good is their bullpen. Their offense wasn’t the greatest but it improved and their rotation was derailed a bit by injuries.
Bonds wasn’t like the Bonds of the past couple seasons. He only led the league in walks with 139. He had a 6.6 WAR but compared to the past couple seasons it wasn’t as good as he could be. He had 40 HRs, .269 AVG, .955 OPS, and 146 OPS+.
In the playoffs, in the NLDS the Braves would sweep the Cubs. For the third straight season they’d lose in the NLCS though and for the second straight season swept. At least they lost to the World Series winner again as the Astros won in 7 against the Mariners.
Summary
Bonds in his 5 seasons with the Braves he had a 44.4 WAR, 2 MVPs, 5 ASG appearances, 3 silver sluggers, and 1 ring. He’d get 221 HRs, 857 hits, 1.023 OPS, and a 180 OPS+.
The Braves didn’t exactly improve much more than real life. They got one ring in the 5 year span just like real life but only 1 WS appearance unlike real life where they got 3 (92, 95, 96). Bonds was quite similar to himself in the 5 year span though and if 1994 wasn’t cut short he would’ve had almost an exact WAR as in the simulation.
In the end, according to OOTP 20 even with Barry Bonds the Braves will only win 1 World Series during 1992-1996, if I were to sim more to possibly 2001 then maybe they’ll get more in the sim. Maybe they could’ve won more had Maddux went to Atlanta in the sim.
Is there any other “What if’s” like this that you think would be interesting to sim in OOTP 20?
