Training
In July 2018 I moved up to northern California for grad school where I found myself both bored (it’s a ‘sleepy’ town) and overwhelmed (school was kicking my ass). So I started running again and set the lofty goal of running a sub 17:00 at the 2019 Carlsbad 5000 where I posted my previous ‘adult’ PB of 17:33 in 2016. I had no reason to believe that I could actually run sub17 but it’s the qualification time for a running club I am interested in joining.
  • Base Building (July 2018 – Dec 2018)
I built volume from pretty much nothing to 45/50mpw gradually without following any specific training routine. A typical week had a track workout, a tempo, and a longish run. Along the way I posted 10k times of 39:39 in Sept 2018, a 39:16 in Oct 2018, and a 39:04 in Dec 2018. My only goal for base building was to get back in shape but I was still very discouraged with my progress. My training was consistent, I felt fit, and I ran some great workouts but my race times were well behind where I expected them to be. After that last 10K in December I threw the sub17 goal out the window…. there was no way I could go from a 18:50 5K equivalent to under 17:00 in just 12 weeks. Shoot, I figured breaking 18 would be a reach.
  • Pfitz 5K Plan (Jan 2019 – Apr 2019)
I started a modified version of the Pfitz 12 week 5K plan that peaked at 55mpw on 14 Jan. Modifications included: 1) Re-organizing the schedule so I could run the track workouts on Monday with my track club and do the second workout on Thursday. 2) Added a bit of volume to every week, usually by making warm up/cool down a little longer and adding a mile or 2 to the endurance runs. 3) Planned to do two strength workouts a week and one yoga session. The strength/yoga doubles lasted two weeks until I was overwhelmed by classes and forced to stick with one workout a day.
Weekly mileage was: 50.5, 50.8, 52.9, 8.2*, 50.3, 55.6, 57.8, 57.2, 59.4, 57, 46.9, 38.7.
I suffered a non-running related back injury in week 4 and had to take almost the entire week off.
In the end, a typical week (Week 6) looked like this:

For training paces, I started the training block using Pfitz’s 18:30/18:00 but quickly found myself running at 17:30 paces.
I was surprised by the amount of quality workouts this program prescribed. The speed, VO2, and LT workouts were obviously hard but the endurance runs that followed were the ones that really kicked my ass. I often ran the endurance runs too hard through… I ran them as a progression style run and I have a hard time capping myself off at a certain pace once I start picking up the pace. I often found myself dipping into the 6:40-50 range when I was ‘supposed’ to end at 7:10.
To my shock and surprise, I ran my first tune-up 5K in 17:38 running gorgeous 5:45/5:40/5:35 negative splits. It was an magical race... one of those runs where you wished the race was longer because you feel so good. Every step felt like an opportunity to catch someone (early on) and extend my lead (later). I was running ‘offensively’ and I loved every second of it. My second didn’t go so well. Final time was 18:42 on a 3.32 mile (GPS) course with ugly 5:30/5:38/5:48 mile splits. It hurt and I found myself running ‘defensively’. Even though my pace was slightly faster than my first race I was disheartened.
The program has a 10 day taper which I think is a bit much for a 5K. I felt uncomfortably well rested and strange niggles popped up in my achilles, knee, and groin. After 11 weeks of stress I think my body just didn’t quite know what to do without constant stimulus. I also lost a lot of focus in the last week of the plan and it carried over to the race weekend.
Race Weekend
I made the 7 hour drive down to Carlsbad on Thursday night meet up with friends all weekend. This was a big mistake. I had late nights on Thursday and Friday where I ate like trash and drank too much. Saturday afternoon I broke free from my friends to do an easy 4 mile shakeout run, some strides, and get my head on right. I was a mess of anxiety and nervous as hell. Before the first tune up 5K I was eager to get out there and see what I had. Now I didn’t even want to race. I felt past my peak, over rested, and unfocused. I had a 17:33 under my belt which was a great improvement by itself and I was terrified of repeating my second tune-up race experience where I bonked and hung on for dear life.
Race Plan
Simple: Go out in 5:40, run offensively, negative split for a 17:30. No heroics. Play it safe and accomplish the goal.

After a 5 minute delay to let a train go by the gun fires and a mass of runners take off. The first 500m is a straightaway and the crowd is so thick you just have to run with them. I took a quick glance at 500m where we make a 90* left turn and saw I was under 5 min pace. SLOW DOWN, I told myself. I did, and as the crowd thinned out I found my stride behind a pack of runners about 10m ahead of me. I felt pretty darn good and slowly started reeling the pack in. I was surprised when my watch beeped off the first mile and even more surprised when I looked down to see a 5:17. 5:17? 5:17!?! [email protected]&*[email protected]@#(
Mile [2]
So much for my race plan- this was either going to be a really big day for me or a suffer fest or both. My little pack hung together until the first 180* turn and then started falling apart. Thankfully everyone when out too hard and the number of runners catching me were equal to the number of runners I was catching. Mile two beeped off in 5:32 but I was starting to hurt.
Mile [3.1]
One ticket for the struggle bus, please. At one point I looked down at my watch and saw a 5:55 pace. That was emotionally crushing. I never looked down at my watch again. I just kept telling myself that I worked too hard for this to fall apart now. At 4000m we hit the second 180* turn and it trying to re-accelerate out of the tight turn up the small incline was brutal. Shortly after the turn you can see the Carlsbad Village sign which marks 3 miles and the turn to the finish. I didn’t see my mile three split (it was 5:43). I don’t remember much about the final straight except trying to outkick a few people around me. I don’t remember if I beat them or not. I looked about as bad as I felt.
Post-race
I didn’t see the clock during the home stretch but I was dimly aware I was under 17:30. I did a double take on my watch when I saw 17:13 and didn’t really believe it until I checked the official times later. After the race I met up with my old running group in the beer tent and then watched the elite women and men’s race. That was a real treat. I’m a bit of an NAZ fan boy so I hooted and hollered for Danielle Shanahan and Alice Wright. I’m pretty sure Shanahan looked at me, that was pretty cool. In the men’s race Nick Hilton seemed like he was hurting so I gave him some ‘blue collar’ encouragement (a reference to an NAZ podcast- he works full time as a pro runner). And, of course, seeing King Ches was an absolute treat. ACCELERATE HIS CITIZENSHIP PAPERWORK ALREADY!
Assessment
I am pretty conflicted about the whole experience. On one hand, the training cycle was a success by all measures. I finished every single workout despite a pretty rough academic semester. This was also my first time successfully completing an entire Pfitz training program- my other two attempts ended in lower leg injuries. I destroyed my realistic goal of going sub-17:30, set a new ‘adult’ PB, and even broke my high school PB of 17:2x. I should be ecstatic about what I accomplished but… I don’t for some reason I’m a bit dejected. First, I’m pissed at myself for losing focus over the last week of the training plan. I put in so much work and just… stopped caring before the finale. Second, I’m super pissed about not following my race plan. Even more than running a good time I wanted to recreate the experience of my first tune-up race… to run offensively and feel good.
Anyway, hate to end it on a down note but that’s how I’m feeling. Plans for the future are a week or two completely off before starting some more distance-focused work for a half marathon in June.

Thought I'd complie all the information about Windows 10 since its out tomorrow to allow people to be more informed before they upgrade.
Please be aware that as with any new Windows OS there may be problems so some people might want to give this a couple of weeks before deciding to upgrade.

A very good peice of advice from Shiroi_Kage
If you're upgrading and are afraid of problems, DO NOT UPGRADE BEFORE SAVING A SYSTEM IMAGE! With a system image you can roll your system back to the way it was before the update, stored files and all. This is the safest option, and I would recommend it to everyone.

Update your anti-virus software if it's anything other than Windows Defender / Security Essentials. Some vendors, most notably Symantec (both SEP and Norton), require an engine upgrade to work with Windows 10.
Defragment your hard disk before upgrading. SSD users should run a TRIM. (The Windows 8 defrag utility is smart enough to TRIM when you click "optimize")
After the upgrade, clean up. Run "disk cleanup" and select the "Clean system files" option. Doing this will clear out 20-30GB of crap (your old Windows folder). This does prevent an in-place downgrade but it improves performance and saves disk. Once you clean up all the stuff you can, defragment the hard disk again. (or run a TRIM if you have an SSD)

It is Free for most people

For an entire year (up to July 29th 2016) an upgrade to Windows 10 is free for everyone if you are running Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1.
If you are on Windows 7 enterprise. (Insert star trek jokes here) then you need to read this from Microsoft's FAQ.
Enterprise customers with active Software Assurance subscription in volume licensing have the benefit to upgrade to Windows 10 enterprise offerings outside of this offer.

Resvering your upgrade can be done via the small windows logo in the notification area. If you do not have this, then make sure you install the latest updates for your OS. Then all you need to do is reserve it. The OS will download ahead of time and then you'll be notified when it is ready to install.
Keep in mind that MS are rolling it out so don't be too surprised if you don't get to use Windows 10 on July 29th.
If you have all the latest updates for your OS and still can't see the reservation icon. Then try heading here and reserving that way.

I had the same exact issue as you, no scripts or task scheduler magic was working, and someone suggested to (in an elevated [admin]) CMD prompt type. start ms-gwx:reserve And it worked!
Edit: To address concerns about the specific times Windows 10 will be released. Microsoft hasn't given any specifcs about release times. So for the time being you'll just have to play the waiting game.

Will it work?

In short if you can run Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 and meet these requirements. Windows 10 should work just fine. During the resevration process it'll also show you if any hardware or software isn't compatible.

Windows 7 Ultimate / Pro upgrades?

If you have Windows 7 pro or Ultimate you'll be upgraded to Windows 10 pro. If you have Windows 7 home etc then you'll upgrade to Windows 10 home. See here for the upgrade chart.

Windows XP upgrade to Windows 10?

At this moment in time there's no word on this but assume for now at least that you can't upgrade XP to Windows 10. If you want Windows 10 then upgrade to Windows 7 and then upgrade to Windows 10.
Besides if your still running XP there's a chance your hardware can't support Windows 10.

Windows Vista Upgrade to Windows 10

As with Windows XP. Upgrading from Vista to Windows 10 is not yet supported. Same thing applies. Upgrade to genuine Windows 7 and then upgrade to Windows 10. Non-Genuine upgrades
Sadly if you are using a non genuine version of Windows then you cannot upgrade to Windows 10. Microsoft did actually say otherwise a few months back but they did a 180 on this.
Some people with non-genuine Windows 7 / 8.1 have been seeing the icon to reserve Windows 10. Most likely case is that you'll upgrade to a non-genuine version of Windows 10.

What about game compatibility?

I've posted this several times already. But from the looks of things a lot of games (including games from GoG) should work just fine on Windows 10.

Upgrade or fresh install?

If you want Windows 10 for free, you should first upgrade and make sure everything works. Then from within Windows 10 you should be able to do a fresh install.
If doing a fresh install you can try using Ninite to install essential software quickly.

Also be aware that when using ninite, you're not able to install programs to a different drive other than your C drive/default. So say if you have an older 120GB SSD for Windows and programs on a separate drive, you may want to consider getting a larger SSD if you're doing a fresh install and want to use Ninite. The dev had made it quite clear they had no plans to support custom install locations, the last time I checked.
Chocolatey on the other hand, supports it, albeit will need a bit of know-how:
Overriding default install directory or other advanced install concepts
If you do an upgrade then you shouldn't have to reinstall anything.

After upgrading I extracted my Windows Key using The Ultimate PID Checker , this allowed me to reinstall Windows 10 from ISO using that key.

What about Drivers / Updates

I've not heard much about this as of yet, but a forced update on Windows 10 might mess a few things up but MS are releasing a ultilty for Windows 10 Home users that lets you block certian updates.
Windows 10 pro already has a feature alllowing users to "Defer" upgrades. Which allows them to control when they recieve updates.
As for actual drivers there seems to be people in the comments that have had no issues with Windows 10. As stated at the top of this thread there might be some issues with some drivers so go into this with that in mind.

DX12

For those wondering nVida has stated that DX12 is backwards compatible with a lot of their older cards. So don't panic if you don't have an 900 series card.
AMD are also going to make it backwards comatible but probably not to the same extent as nVida.
Nvidia will support DX12 on every Fermi, Kepler, and Maxwell-class GPU. That means nearly every GTX 400, 500, and 600 series card will be supported. Interestingly, AMD isn’t necessarily following suit — the company has indicated that it will support DX12 on all GCN-based hardware, but hasn’t indicated if HD 6000 or HD 5000 cards will be included in that.

Only GCN cards are supported and pre-GCN cards will operate at their native feature level. (The HD6570s at work run just peachy, but they're still DX11 cards.)
Which GPUs are Graphics Core Next and which ones are the old TeraScale architecture is unusually confusing to determine so here's the rundown:
Discrete GPUs
All HD6xxx and 5xxx cards are Terascale. No DX12 for you.
All Radeon HD 7700 and up cards are GCN. (HD7600 and lower are TeraScale)
All Radeon HD 85xx cards are GCN. (HD84xx and lower are TeraScale)
All Radeon Rx-200 series R5-240 and higher are GCN. The R5-235 and lower are TeraScale.
All Rx-300 series GPUs are GCN.
Advanced Processing Units (APUs)
All Bobcat based APUs (Desna, Ontario, Zacate cores) are TeraScale. (and way too slow for most games anyway, who cares?)
All FM1 and FM2 APUs are TeraScale. (Richland, Trinity, Llano cores)
All FM2+ "Kaveri" APUs and later are GCN. Also all FP3 and FP4 mobile APUs are GCN (Kaveri and Carrizo cores)
All AM1/FS1b "Kabini" APUs are GCN as are the FT3 and FT3b mobile parts (Kabini, Temash, Beema, Mullins)

GPU's

According to auto_pilot there's seems to be issues with crossfire.
I'm running insider build, clean install and most programs and games work fine as long as I don't turn on crossfire. The minute crossfire is on everything gets chunky and crashes as far as games go.
There's currently no word on SLI support for Windows 10.

Overclocking

mbot57 seems to have found an issue with overlclocking.
It should be noted that as of the RTM release (WIP build 10240) there is still an OS lock on overclocking CPUs. Discovered having tested identical hardware on both Windows 7 sp1 and windows 10 WIP build 10240 (and previous versions).

Personal Experience from illage2

Well I now have Windows 10 and I have to say upgrading was a nightmare. It took about 1.5 hours, and then when I finally got into Windows 10 the performance was terrible. However I found that resetting my PC under settings seems to resolve it, but sadly you'll lose all the stuff you had installed.
If you want to do a fresh install after upgrading go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Reset this PC you can either reset and keep your files or just reset and delete everything.
